Types of Bathroom Furniture

Most interior designers find it challenging to design and decorate a well-facilitated bathroom. For most people, it is the perfect place to relax and release the body and mind from the clutches of routine tensions and stress. It provides personal space to individuals and therefore necessitates pleasant décor. There is a baffling range of bathroom accessories and furniture to appeal to people with varied tastes. From traditional to contemporary, the range is endless and come in all price brackets.
Vanity sink cabinets are a popular choice among cabinets. They come with sleek and stylish countertops made of various materials. Most people, who have smaller bathrooms, prefer to have cabinets that include a mirror and shaver sockets. Generally, cabinets are designed to include drawers for keeping undergarments and other necessary items. Many people prefer oak or maple cabinets. Rattan furniture and Wicker furniture is highly popular as it combines strength and intricate designs. Wicker furniture offers a rustic look to the furniture and is made from bamboo, reed, willow, or synthetic fibers. A large number of wicker objects can be included in the bathroom to complement the furniture. This form of furniture is inexpensive and easily available. Most common type of wicker furniture includes chest of drawers to keep linen.

Contemporary bathrooms include lavish bathtubs, which come in a variety of colors, styles, and materials. Bathtubs can come in round, rectangular or a square shape. Bathtubs can be made of stainless steel, ceramic or glass. Acrylic baths are also very popular among most individuals as they are devoid of the cold metallic feel. However, stainless steel baths score over acrylic baths as they last longer and are easier to maintain. Washbasins are also designed aesthetically to complement the décor of the bathroom.

Bathroom furniture can be complimented by choosing matching or contrast furnishings such as curtains. Many people select furniture and accessories that complement the bedroom furniture as well.

Choosing A Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks should be chosen for their functionality as well as their aesthetic value in the kitchen. There are literally hundreds of styles of sinks and numerous materials and mounting methods available.
Sink bowls are different sizes in both opening and depth and vary in the bowl shape. Bowls can be combined in single units to obtain double and triple bowl sinks, in many cases the bowls are of different sizes in order to serve different purposes. Sinks can also be obtained with integral drainers.

For mounting, a free standing sink can be purchased as a surface mount, where it has a rim that is visible on top of the counter and a under-counter mount, which, as the name implies the sink mounts under the counter and there is no visible rim. You cannot use an under-counter mount if your counter top is not made of solid material such as a composite or natural stone. The third style of sink is one that is integral with the counter top, these are available for composite type counter tops.

The most common kitchen sink, whether it be a surface mount or under-counter mount is made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is the best sink when it comes to cleaning, durability and stain resistance.

Kitchen sinks can also come with an assortment of accessories. Items such as vegetable cutting boards are quite common.

The depth of a kitchen sink can be very important. If you use a lot of large pots in your cooking, remember that you want a convenient method of filling the pot with water. If the sink isn't deep enough, you will have problems. The need for a deep sink can be offset by having a faucet with a spout hose.

Garden Design

Gardens have been around since a long time, although recent developments have introduced many intuitive ideas for designing wonderful gardens. For example, a combination of concrete bricks and vinyl fencing is enough to create a garden worth admiring.
Garden designs have been split into two types in modern days: informal and formal gardens. In some cases it can be hard to establish the difference between the two types.

Formal Garden - Oriental

Oriental gardens may seem very informal at first but that is not the case. These gardens are very formal and they use the space available for different elements with care and purpose. In many opinions oriental garden is seen as the ultimate of beauty and style. The mixture of stones, plants and water are carefully picked to highlight the different areas that are within the garden. Everything that is chosen has meaning attached to it. And finally another feature of this type of garden is that nothing is overdone, it is kept as it is likely to be found in naturally.

Paradise

An alternative type of formal garden is the Paradise garden, which came from Islamic history. This is built keeping in mind on thing which is to stimulate all five of our sense. For example you will hear the water running down in a stream or waterfall, you will smell the essence of the flowers, see the bright colors, eat the fruits growing in your garden and feel the plants'.

Informal Gardens

When you see a garden built within an existing marquee of trees, that is when you have seen an informal garden. These trees are used as a starting point to create the plan for the garden, they can be used as a direction to create a walk path within the garden. Then the rest of empty spaces can be filled with plants that do not need sunlight. A small area for pond can put a brilliant touch to finish the garden off.

To summarise you need to keep open to the various opportunities available for you, do not do what your neighbours are doing, do what you want to do. At the end of the day only you can decide on your dream garden, it does not have to be either a informal or formal garden design. It comes down to personal taste and what you would love to be in your garden. All you need is just your imagination.

Beautiful Bedroom Sets

Whoever said that bedroom sets had to cost a great deal of money to be comfortable or attractive must have profited from a well known name brand furniture designer looking to make a buck. You can find affordable bedroom sets all over the place, many of which are perfect imitations of some of the more expensive designs, without having to look hard. Where are the best places to start looking for inexpensive furnishings for your bedroom?

Decorating your home with discount bedroom sets is made simple by online stores that wrap the entire set into one package deal. While many high end furniture stores will sell items by the piece and never offer a discount for bulk purchases, others will knock hundreds of dollars off the price when you buy the entire set. Many of these will let you add pieces to the discount bedroom sets for a minimal cost as well, such as a second night table, an armoire, or chest of drawers. Online stores have the advantage of saving money on shipping when ordering multiple items and some will pass that savings on to you.

Another place to look is the factory. If you call a manufacturer, you may find that they have affordable bedroom sets sitting in a warehouse that no one has ordered, that were returned, or that have small mistakes, like being short a nail or having a small scratch in the wood. Choosing among these can save you hundreds of dollars on a brand new furniture set, even on the more expensive name brand products.

Another way to save money on your bedroom is to look at something smaller. For example, while you might want a king sized bed, queen bedroom sets and their accessories cost a lot less. This means that you can save not only on the immediate purchase but also on the additional décor later. When it comes to kids bedroom sets, you don't even need anything decorative. Your children are going to grow and change so quickly that you shouldn't spend a fortune on the bedroom suite that they pick out. Instead, choose something that will be functional for years to come, and let your son or daughter pick out the twin sized comforter that will decorate the kids bedroom set that you purchase.

One final way to find affordable bedroom sets is by visiting furniture stores when the latest styles arrive. During this time, it is necessary to make room for the newest fashions that have arrived and discard last year's models, much like liquidation at a car lot or a seasonal sale at a department store. Therefore, you can find affordable bedroom sets among last season's "cast offs" that are marked down to make way for the new models.

Home Sweet Home Front'

Much has been written about Britain's Military role in the Second World War. From the Outbreak of hostilities in 1939 to peace in 1945, accounts of Britain's early struggle through to her eventual victory are well documented.

But what of those left behind? Those civilians of the home front left to face their own hardships and the ever changing times. How did they cope with the restrictions of rationing? How did they come to terms with the frightening reality of air raid bombings? How did British women overcome male disdain and evolve from their recognised role of home makers to that of the working women of the 'Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WVS)', munitions factories, the 'Women's Land Army (WLA)' and the such like?

The 'Home Sweet Home Front' website has been designed to go some way to give insight into what it was really like for those heroes and heroines of the British home front during World War Two - click and enjoy!

Right Color, Right Paint

Perfect paint and color can make a great difference to your home décor project. Here are some tips for amateur home decorators and professional interior designers that can help them understand the color basics and make paint selection easier:
Alkyd or oil-based paints are good for wood painting and does not leave it sticky in winters but latex or water-based paints dry faster, can be cleaned with soapy water and does not turn yellow easily and is thus, better for walls.
Chosen paint colors may look different in different lights, at daytime and at night. So, you may want to access the look of the room in different lights and according to the function of the room.
Colors can look darker or lighter over a large area depending on the colors of the surroundings and lighting in the room, so keep that in mind while choosing the right tint or shade of the color.
Dark and warm shades make rooms look smaller such as red, orange, yellow and even dark shades of navy blue while light and cool colors make the room look larger and more spacious such as light shades of blue, green and even violet. Best colors for small rooms are white and light and pale neutral colors.
For an open, spacious and airy look in a room with chair rails, paint the portion below the chair rail in a dark shade and the wall above it in a light shade.
Generally, ceilings are painted in pure white, off white and tinted white colors to make them appear high and make the room look open but if ceilings are high enough, one can use medium to dark colors to make the room look cozier as they tend to make the ceiling advance to the eyes of the viewer.
Since colors affect the mood, choose relaxing muted colors for bedrooms and stimulating colors for kitchen and dining room.
Taking furniture, window treatments and accessories of the room into consideration, determine the color scheme of the room.
To add bold dash of colors to the room, use a darker shade to paint the trims than the walls.
To add subtle accents to the room, use a lighter shade to paint your trims.
To calculate the amount of paint you need for a room, multiply the height of the room by its perimeter taking care not to count the doors, windows and archways in the room to calculate its wall space. Then ask the paint stores for the exact amount of paint your will need for the calculated wall space of the room and number of coats you are planning for. Since blue and yellow colors need more coats, you will need more of them, in case you are using them.
To disguise an unattractive trim or achieve a monochromatic, uniform look, paint your trim in the same color as your walls.
To soften the look of a bold color on walls, you can try rag rolling, sponging or color washing the walls using a light muted shade.

Choosing Color Schemes

Color scheme helps your to determine the harmony between colors in home décor. A color wheel can be quite useful while deciding a color scheme for your home as it helps you to compare complimentary colors. Interactive color wheel tools and software are available online for your reference. The use of color wheel makes choosing the combination of colors for painting your walls, accents, furnishings, furniture and accessories much easier. Here are a few tips that you can use while deciding upon the color scheme for your home:

Monochromatic color scheme uses only one color throughout. Variety is introduced by using various tints, tones, values and shades of that key color and different textures.

Complimentary color scheme uses two colors placed opposite to each other on the color wheel, their tints, tones, shades and values such as yellow and violet. This scheme is quite bold and lend a dramatic touch to the home décor.
Analogous color schemes use three hues placed adjacent to each other on the color wheel but use either combination of warm colors only or combination of cool colors only.

Triadic color schemes use three hues placed consecutively or at equal distances from each other such as red, yellow and blue, their tints, tones, shades and values

A novice can easily decide upon the color scheme using the following steps:

Use your favorite pattern as the guiding line for your color palette. The lightest color in the pattern can be used for the background such as wall paint color, medium color for large furniture pieces, windows, doors, closets and cabinets while the darkest color can be used for accessories.

Color can make quite a lot of difference to the size and proportion of the room. So, remember that white and pale colors reflect light more to making the room appear larger while dark colors make room appear cozier and smaller.

When it comes to furniture and accessories, white and pale colored objects or objects in similar color as the wall recede into background while brighter and darker objects attract our attention more and seem to occupy more space, so if the room is really small, you can try buying furniture and furnishings in same color as your walls or pale shades and accessorize with bright bold colors to create focal points.

Decoration Trends

Decoration and design trends and themes keep changing with times, as do the facilities and appliances one uses in the home. It plays quiet an important role in almost all of the decorating decisions. The three most talked about and basic decoration trends are:
Country or rustic look;
Casual or contemporary décor; and
Traditional and classic look.

While most prefer to decorate their homes in contemporary style, traditional styles bring back nostalgic memories to many. There are some others who feel that country and rustic style home put us closer to nature. All the other themes are considered secondary in nature and are developed on one of these themes as the foundation. Such as country style is said to provide the base for Country French or Mission-style home decoration. We can see that in some regions, one style dominated others while in another region, some other style or trend may have the upper hand.

The decoration style preferred by a person usually depends on individual taste, age and color combinations. Casual home décor is usually guided by home decorating magazines and may range from black plastic to chrome and glass combinations. These days, people are going for clean, simple and minimalist décor with occasional geometric patterns. Colors most preferred these days beige, white and gray with light wood furniture and accessories such as those made from natural maple to match.

The traditional style of course uses rich and ornate designs that reflect grandeur and opulence and deep and dark colors with jewel tones such as emerald green, burgundy and navy blue. The details are often in polished brass and gold work while woodwork is generally of cherry wood and has dark stains. Leather furniture is also common in such décor.

The country style keeps changing too. While plaids, fruity and birdy patterns have long gone out of style; baby boomers love to be 'cool and trendy'. Bright color combinations are quite common with ample use of lime green, bright blue and red that are muted down using the soft pastels and earthy tones here and there. Sturdy, overstuffed, nostalgic furniture is a common sight in this style with an antique look enhanced by crackled or distressed paint finish. They are meant to be very very comfortable, warm and cozy.

While decorating homes in a particular style, you do not only pay attention to family rooms, kitchens or dining areas only but also extend it to the master and guest bathrooms and powder rooms for the complete effect. Chrome and brushed nickel are the most popular bath accessory finishes closely followed by oil-rubbed bronze and wrought iron looks. These bath accessories can also be categorized under the heads of country, casual or contemporary, and classic or traditional. New trends include 'retro-style' designs and wood finishes such as that of maple and oak along with constant influx of new simple, creative and innovative designs such as open towel ring or stylish glass shelf that add new dimension to bath décor and complement the overall bath designs.

There are faucets and showerheads that should be chosen according to the decoration style that you choose and accessories should match the finish of faucets. Use traditional accessories in non-traditional ways such as placing small votive candles in existing soap tumbler holders for a soft glow or tall tapers in a large bath to add the dramatic and romantic touch. Decorative shelves can be used to place fresh flowers or family photos for that special touch. You may also add color and texture to the bath by using towels and napkins of all sizes to match your chosen decoration style without having to spend big bucks for enhancing the character of your home.

Decorating Small Home

Space in home and apartment décor is not just about physical dimensions. It is about the visual impression too. So, use these wonderful tips to transform your small apartment or home into a luxurious, lavish, airy and spacious home:
Arrange the largest piece of furniture on the longest wall of the room and keep the focal point easily visible from the place.
Buy small pieces of furniture that have open designs and can be rearranged easily such as a love seat with exposed legs instead of big bulky sofa sets, two small side chairs and a small glass top coffee table.
Ceiling lightings should be avoided as it cuts off the height of the room.
Ceilings lighter than the walls and furniture of the room make room look brighter.
Mark out a conversation area in the living room by placing the loveseat on the longest wall, coffee table in front of it and the side chairs facing the table on both its sides.
Place your furniture in the room in such a manner that people don't stumble into it while coming in or going out of the room or to reach cabinets and closets.
Soft incandescent lights placed evenly throughout the room that eliminate shadows make room look larger.
Soft monochromatic color schemes make rooms look bigger.
Stick to simplistic minimalist lifestyle and keep your home clean and well organized.
Use accessories sparingly and use mirrors and shiny reflective surfaces abundantly so that it reflects more light and makes the room look bigger and more spacious.
Use smaller patterns on walls and big pieces of furniture. If you do use large patterns, stick to small accessories, pillows and small areas.
