Decorating Kids Bedrooms

In almost every case, the child is being over stimulated by the bedroom decor, there is a direct correlation between the epidemic of hyperactivity in our children and the way their bedrooms are decorated.

Kids can't relax in a bedroom overflowing with toys and accentuated bright primary color. We need to tuck our children into the tranquil embrace of a cozy, serene bedroom that encourages them to calm down and get the rest they need.

When choosing colors for a child's bedroom, use warm pastels or rich colors such as lavender, peach, butter cream, and cocoa.

Change art and decorative themes that are flying, falling, driving, or running around the room to a motif that is tranquil and calm. Serenity is the keynote here, when you calm the bedroom down, you'll calm your child down, too.

Children's bedrooms can easily become overcrowded with toys, games, equipment, and collections. Every item that speaks of activity contributes to keeping the room "awake". Display a selection of comfort toys, such as stuffed animals and dolls, and store their action-orientated toys out of sight in trunks, closets and cabinets.

Siblings to sleep by: when children share a bedroom, give each child a distinct place within the room to call their own. It may be half of the room, a table and chair, a toy trunk, a closet, or a bureau. This keeps each child's individuality defined and helps them learn how to respect other people's space.

Bunks beds can be used as long as both children are happy with them.

Garden & Outdoor spaces

Patio, decks, balconies, porches and yards are the extension of our living space. From landscaped grounds to the tiniest balcony, nearly any exterior area can be the setting for a comfortable outdoor room. With nice outdoor furniture, your outdoor space can become much more than a backdrop for occasional barbecue; it can be as welcoming as the living room and an integral part of everyday life.

Your outdoor space should be decorated with the same attention to comfort, style, and creativity as any other room. Today you can find new weather-resistant materials and stylish outdoor furniture to create an outdoor space that's truly an extension of the home. Create an outdoor area that truly reflects who you are and the way you live. Outside, a few fruit trees, a flowering pergola, a row of terra-cotta pots, or the curves of a large canvas umbrella set the stage. Your outdoor space has the potential to become your favorite destination for eating, entertaining, relaxing. Select a decorating scheme that celebrates your style, and furnishings and accessories that make you feel at home under the open sky.

Outdoor Funiture
Choose outdoor furniture and fabrics that wear well in sun and take a bit of rain. In a protected space, like a covered porch, bring your favorite old sofa outdoors for the season, or set a new one on casters to use in fine weather. To protect your upholstery from sun damage, adopt the southern tradition of dressing furniture for the summer with waterproof or canvas slipcovers. Lightweight wicker armchairs fitted with removable cushions make ideal seating for a crowd. Take a cue from nature itself when choosing furnishings and find fabrics that wear well in sun and can take a bit of rain or a week of it. Invest in tables and chairs, benches, made of enameled metal or weather-tolerant hardwood, such as teak, redwood or nyatoh.

Teak
Indigenous to the warm, humid climate of Southeast Asia, teak wood is an ideal choice for outdoor furnishings. In fact, its rich luster improves with age and weathering, so teak adds a polished, permanent look to others furnishings in outdoor spaces. The high oil content of teak makes it watertight and resistant to warping and insects damage. Select your dining tables, lounge chaises, seating chairs, Adirondack chairs with comfort and resistance.

Outdoor lighting
A layered lighting plan bathes a nighttime gathering in a flattering, enchanted glow. Enchanted evenings depend upon the magic of lighting, the intimate glow of votive lights interspersed with flowers on a festive table, a sentinel of line hurricane lamps, a vintage chandelier suspended above your outside dining table. Varying the intensity and source of illumination adds drama and depth to your party site, reinforcing a feeling of inclosure around a core of festivity. Glass hurricanes anchored with stones keep candles glowing when the wind picks up. Try solar-powered options to help conserve energy and cut down on maintenance, most turn on automatically in the evening and maintain their glow for up to ten hours. Freestanding lamps can be set on tables, and take-mounted styles can be pressed down into flower spots, allowing rearrangement as needed.

Barbecue
Like the open-air dining, outdoor cooking has an allure all its own. The pleasure of cooking outdoors is often as satisfying as the meal itself. Setting up an outdoor kitchen can take as little preparation as wheeling out the charcoal grill, or as much planning as building a fully outfitted kitchen complete with running water, gas grill, and hearth. If grilling is your favorite culinary pastime, set up a barbecue station.

Water Feature
Water Features is always present in traditional Japanese gardens, the fluidity of water represents timelessness and is thought to unify the garden with the sky through its reflection. A stone basin transforms a trickle of running water into a soothing fountain. Eastern tradition also suggests that the sound of running water connects our thoughts to the present moments and places us in harmony with earth. A planter of succulents provides a low-maintenance garden that will stand up to the most difficult growing conditions: harsh sun and heat by a pool, or wind on a rooftop garden or city balcony. Find creative inspiration with elements that are as beautiful as they are meditative. Fill a planter with water hyacinths and lilies to create a floating garden. Place gazing spheres along a pathway, or a circle of stones near a favorite perch, to soothe your senses and inspire your creativity.

Dining Room

The colors of the china, the shape and size of the table, the tablecloth and napkins, the stemware and flatware, the centerpiece, the dining room lighting, and the greenery all affect the energy and decor. With a few quick variations, you can transform your surroundings into the dining experience you desire.

Dining room colors
The best colors for the dining room are beige, cream, green, blue, and soft pastels such as lavender, pink, peach, and apricot. Add bright yellows, oranges, and warm reds to stimulate the palate. Wallpaper, stencils, sponging, and faux finishes create additional texture.

Dining room table
The dining room table is the main piece of furniture in your dining room, the surface that holds your food, dinnerware, and decorations. The shapes and sizes, and materials you place on and around it create a specific energy. Place your dining room table in the middle of the room to allow people to walk around the table and to get in and out of their chairs with ease. If the size and shape of the table and room allow, try placing a rectangular table across the room. Wood tables are strong and stable. Wood warms the space. If your old wooden table needs a fresh look, stain it with a new finish or paint it an antique white or a muted color such as green, blue, or light red.

Dining chairsA comfortable chair encourages leisurely dining. Sturdy chairs with a solid back will support you; add seat cushions for additional comfort and color. Ensure that the view from each chair is a spectacular one, both inviting and pleasing to the eye.

Art

Focus on enhancing the harmony and vitality of your environment. Surround yourself with things that lift your spirits and deepen your love for life as a primary goal, either you like abstract art, contemporary art, sculptures, photography, watercolors, mosaics, ceramics, art nouveau, tibetan art,... Get inspired when visiting art institutes, now you can buy online, art framed, prints, art reproduction. Visit art galleries in your area. If art is your passion, find art school, art college in your area. Take some art classes...

Pour your individuality into your home, room by room in exactly the way you find most appealing. The colors and images in your art reflect aspects of yourself that can build you up or tear you down. Your artwork elicits positive feelings and acts as an environmental affirmation throughout your home. Your art should be an accurate reflection of your inspired self. Spiritual art that is meaningful to you is also a potent way to attract and uplift energy. This includes images of angels, saints, gods and mystics. Choose symbols that have personal, inspirational meaning for you. Your creativity and artistry should be an integral part of your home. Whether it's watercolors, photographs, ceramics, weavings, or collages, any art that you or your family have made and are proud of is your home as a result.

Original art, touched directly by the artist's hand, also carries a concentrated amount of energy. When you buy local artists' works, you are benefiting from their creativity while supporting your community. Only a few of us can afford the original art of the great masters, most of us can afford the creative works of our local artists

TIPS:
-Take a few moments to look into the art you have collected in the last past years and ask yourself what part of you does each piece represent? Do you like what you see? If not, make it a priority to let it go and replace it with art that you really love.

-Your art, like everything else that surrounds you, is meant to lift and nurture you on a daily basis. Enjoy collecting art that reflects your goals and dreams. Express yourself, and relish the process of creating a home that is, in itself, an "original".

Feng Shui Living Room

In Feng Shui the living room is associated with the fire element. The living room is a room for socializing and relaxation where you can display the art, colors and collections that you love. It’s a place where you read watch TV, listen to music, and talk with friends and family. Today’s living room are multi-functional. Feel your living room with items that make you feel alive.

Living room layouts: a good furniture arrangement creates a relaxing social environment. It is important that the arrangement of furniture and the color scheme make the room inviting.

Feng Shui Tips for living room:
-Round dining tables or round coffee tables are more comfortable to gather around in informal settings than square or rectangular ones. A rectangle is good if not too long. An octagon table is a very auspicious shape. Avoid glass-topped tables especially with no frames, as it’s not possible to relax fully around the sharp edge of glass.

-TV cabinets with doors are recommended. It can dramatically improve the quality of life by promoting a variety of social and family activities, as well as quiet time.

-Ceilings: balance ceiling height.Low ceiling tips The most effective way to balance a room with low ceiling is with lighting that shines up toward the ceiling

-Use light and bright colors throughout the room, mirrors when appropriate, and little dark color as possible. Low furniture keeps the room in scale and makes the ceiling look higher.

Canopy Beds

A canopy bed is a four-poster bed with a canopy of fabric overhead. Alternately, the canopy can be hung from the ceiling.

Historically in Europe canopy beds have been a status symbol and were made using the most expensive fabrics available-silk, damasks and brocades with gold and silver threads. They were very elaborate with heavy curtains completely enclosing the bed to keep the warmth in.

With the advent of modern heating, the canopy became more decorative and less functional, sometimes supported by just two posts at the head of the bed and extending only a few feet. In warmer climates a canopy might be made of mosquito netting.

Canopy beds come in all sizes, from twin to king, and usually have a pretty valance that can be trimmed with fringe. The underside of the canopy and the inside of the curtains are generally lined in different fabric. The underside can be shirred, or gathered, to a center sunburst or it can be pulled taut. If the bed has curtains, tie-backs on the posts allow them to be pulled aside. A shirred or pleated curtain can hang down from the canopy behind the headboard.

A canopy bed is formal and feminine, whether in a little girl's room or a master bedroom. While not a necessity, when budget permits, a canopy bed can be a great addition to a bedroom.

Interior Lighting

Lighting creates ambience and makes a room welcoming. Good lighting enables activity, enhances color, and gives a room a sense of warmth and life. Lighting can fill a dark corner, lift a low ceiling, camouflage a dark angle, or brighten up a gloomy room. We are always seeking balance, so we don't want to over-light or under-light any area.

Light fixtures also bring fun and fashion to a space. One of the keys to creating a comfortable and flexible room is to layer the lighting. There are three kinds of lighting to consider. Use a mix ambient, task, and accent lighting to delineate different zones. Choose light fixtures and lamps that add character to your decor.

Ambient lightingBegin with the ambient lighting or general lighting that just makes the room visible. Ambient light is the basic lighting layer, illuminating walls, open areas, and main pieces of furniture so that you can navigate the space with ease. For instance ambient lighting in a living room is very important because the room is often occupied by more than one person. Hanging ceiling fixtures offers the broad wash of diffused illumination required for soft, general lighting. Ambient light can be direct, bounced off a wall, or diffused through a shade to warm up the quality of the light.

Select your style:
Torchières are uplights that emit a soft, even wash of light, their beam bounces from the ceiling before angling down.
Recessed downlights are built into the ceiling and have a reflective lining.
Pendants hang from the ceiling. They come in different shapes and styles that can add another decorative element to a room.
Suspended uplights are ceiling-mounted fixtures that cast light upward and give an even glow.
Wall-mounted uplights or sconces cast a diffused glow and are wise choices for pale-colored rooms or reflective wall finishes.
Task LightsAfter, consider the task lights you'll need for you and your family to read, work, or play. Task lighting is focused light that illuminates a specific activity. Available in a vast number of styles, task lamps offer both direct illumination and great design flexibility because you can often change their style and the effects of their light with different shades or positioning. Place a wall sconces behind the sofa to facilitate reading, or use a swing-arm table lamp on a side or parson's table. Most bedrooms require effective task lighting next to the bed as well as in reading corners, at vanities, and on work surfaces.

Select your style:
Table lamps with three-way bulbs allow for adjustable levels of light. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and wattages.
Swing-arm lamps have adjustable arms that allow the light to be swung into position, perfect at the bedside.
Sconces attach directly to the wall and can offer useful supplementary lighting.
Floor lamps are freestanding and may be adjustable in height.
Desk lamps focus a bright, downward beam of light with high level of illumination.
Closet lights come in options such as hard-wired, low-voltage, or battery-operated.
Accent lightsAccent lights are specific and attention-grabbing. They are used to set mood, draw focus, or add sparkle. larger accent lights like wall washers impart a soft, colorful glow; spotlights can draw attention to favorite artwork or emphasize a focal wall; candles create a sense of movement and cast dramatic shadows. Often, it can be a beautiful decorative accessory on its own. Use accent lighting to spotlight a photo, collection, or display. Place accent lights in bookcase shelves or on a long mantel for subtle illumination.

Select your style:
Picture lights perch over artwork to illuminate it. They are usually low wattage to minimize glare off reflective surfaces.
Track lights can be aimed to highlight architectural details and favorite objects.
Mini-chandeliers hang from the ceiling and add sparkle.
Candles fill a room with warmth and animation; they can add color and scent as well.
Nightlights are very low wattage and offer illumination by which to navigate or sleep.
Beaded-shade lamps change the quality of light, tinting it with jewel tones.
Lighting every room:Foyers, halls and stairways: size the decorative fixture to the space. If the fixture can be viewed from another room, be sure to select a fixture which look attractive. Stairways and halls must have good general lighting for safety.
Bedroom area: gently filtered and flattering light in a bedroom creates a sense of calm and repose. The placement and intensity of lighting affects a space's atmosphere, making it cozy or cool, dramatic or cheerful. The right level of light in a bedroom is entirely personal, it should be flexible enough to let you read, work and relax comfortably. Consider first the ambient lighting or general lighting, it is the light cast by overhead fixtures, whether recessed and largely invisible (as in most modern houses) or pendant and decorative (as in older homes).
Living area: recessed lighting is one of the best ways to light a general area because the light source is concealed. One of the most immediate ways to bring graciousness to a room is by implementing a well-designed lighting plan. By providing multiple sources, both an inviting wash of ambient light and a variety of task and accent lights, you establish the living room a place where all will feel at home. Individual lamps create an intimate feeling. Commonly used as sources for task-specific lighting, floor, table, and wall lamps and their shades can transform the mood of the room. Think of lamp shades as fashion accessories. translucent shades, such as those made of natural parchment, silk, handmade paper, or linen, softly diffuse light; opaque and semi-opaque shades alter the direction of light and focus the beam up or down. Candles are infinitely useful for adding drama, warmth, and sparkle to a space. Aromatic candles infuse a space with long-lasting scent.
Dining area: a chandelier or pendant can be a general lighting element, as well as a focal point of your home. A chandelier should be 6" to 12" smaller than the narrowest side of the table and the bottom of a pendant or chandelier should be approximately 30" above a table. Recessed wall washers can provide additional light while helping to create an illusion of a larger room space.
Kitchen area: decorative fluorescent fixture mounted in the center of a work space is a common choice but as energy efficient as they are, fluorescent bulbs cast a cold white light that makes people look ghostly. Cooking and food preparation require good lighting, you'll make the kitchen a much more attractive place to be by replacing fluorescent lights with incandescent or halogen lighting. Down lights mounted 18'' off the edge of the cabinets, and spaced 3'' or 4'' on centers is an excellent way to create additional general lighting.
Bathroom area and vanity lighting: a good lighting plan begins at the vanity, and proceed from there. Use both side and top lighting, surround the mirror with clear, soft light to avoid shadows and glare on your face. For a nice, ambient radiance, think about indirect lighting, which usually recesses the light source in an over-head cove. Areas over 100 square feet require several recessed down lights or decorative surface mounted fixtures. It's important to understand what qualities of light will work best, both with your skin tone and the materials in the bath. The goal is to provide the room with a background of flattering, even light. To change the mood of installed lighting or to add flourish, use accent lighting, floor lamps, table lamps or chandeliers can all function as accent lights. Bring in pillars, votives, and scented candles to create a true sense of private refuge.
Outdoor lighting: Select a design and size to complement your house while providing sufficient lighting for safety. When installing a wall lantern, size the fixture to the door and surrounding space. Wall lanterns should be mounted slightly above eye level from the center of the fixture to the floor. Post top lanterns are an excellent way to light a walkway, while complimenting wall lanterns. Large post top lanterns make a better impression when used in large open spaces

Window Treatment

Curtains, drapes, blinds, shades, sheers, shutters can produce a clean, neutral backdrop or provide a full-dressed flourish. In either case, the way you choose to treat your windows lends rhythm to a room, adding pattern and color, light and shadow. As with the pleats and folds of a beautifully draped garment, you can tailor almost any kind of dressing to your windows, to stand out on its own or to reinforce the room's style.

Window treatments help to define the decor of a room. They are a visual filter between indoors and out. Create a shelter with a soft wall of texture and color or let light come streaming in.

TipsFirst determine which treatment is appropriate for your room. Notice where the light falls and think about how you use the room.
Consider using double-rod draperies; that way you have both a basic, year-round layer closest to your window, and a second, outer layer that can be changed easily with the seasons. Pick up a color of the season to echo flowers blooming in your garden. In winter, create a cozier or more elaborate treatment with lush fabrics in warm or metallic hues. Heavier fabrics help retain heat, and deeper colors offer respite from winter's cold palette. In spring and summer; a light outer layer lets you open the windows to feel the breeze; materials are generally solid and subtle, in simple weaves like linen and cotton.
Think about how you like your window treatments feel and function before choosing type, color, material, and style. heavily draped, opaque window treatments tend to be more static and sculptural. Lighter or transparent ones have more movement and seem more casual.
With interesting details around your windows like moldings, bed board, or brick, you can can think of inner layer as a tonal extension of the wall and keep it simply neutral. Or, you may want to draw more focus; plain walls may benefit from treatments that create graphic interest.
Choose decorative rods, finials, holdback, and ties that lend elegance or whimsy to your windows. Using garlands of beads, colorful ribbons, or silk scarves as tiebacks can add a creative touch to your windows for the holidays or for celebrations. With window treatments, options are nearly limitless.

Color Your Home

Orange is a very hot and volatile color, which evokes vastly different responses around the world. In the Netherlands. Orange summons a national pride; in Asia it is a holy color used only for Buddhist monks robes; and in the US our immediate reaction is Halloween! Only recently has this brighter, more spectral aspect of the Orange family been more openly received in America. Previously only Spice tones of Cinnabar, Allspice, Paprika and Terracotta were marketable consumer colors.

Fortunately, the influx of bright acidic tones of lime green and lemon yellow in apparel, recreational gear, autos and electronics naturally brought along Tangerine; and Orange then was accepted more readily. Variations of Orange have become hot colors! It is the feature color for advertising, when the statement being made is "New". It is used in communications and graphics for manufacturer wanting to convey "hip and cool" products. Orange perfectly targeted Gen Xers and even younger, who had never seen the color on products before. It was a color they could adopt as their own. Orange arrived!

However, in home furnishings, the use of the Orange family as accents is widely favored; yet the richer more sophisticated reddened oranges of Cinnabar or the yellowed oranges like Allspice or Terracotta are much more livable and are used more frequently. These more muted tones work well with traditional country, ethnic and hearth-based designs. Deep, yet clear tones work with the more exotic design colorations and the influences of the Orient. This deepened range of color has been widely accepted. Orange tones are warm, comfortable, cozy, active, expansive and jovial. Orange is a vibrant color linked to health and vitality. It has developed from the fire of red towards a more earthy tone. Also associated with enthusiasm and optimism, it is a good welcoming color for hallways, but because it is rather flamboyant, you do have to feel that it suits you or it can be rather overwhelming. Ideal for north-facing rooms which need warming up, It is also a great choice for places where conversation needs to be stimulated. In softer colorations of Cora, Salmon, Clay and Peach, it can be quite soothing and sociable.

As demographics have evolved in the US and the greater visibility of other cultures has emerged. Americans find themselves more open to some of the Orange hues that are readily accepted in other part of the world. You need to know the cultural affects on the colors you use , before you use them.

Workspace / Office

Working from home can give you a sense of freedom. A comfortable reading chair, the perfect desk lamp, the perfect desk, storage, working at home has an appeal that's hard to match. Whether it's in a traditional home office, an artist's studio, or a kitchen corner, the perfect workspace is one that works just the way you do. We all want our home offices to be stylish and functional. The best workspaces are retreats that inspire the imagination, when people can work from home there is much more opportunity to create uplifting environments which really support them.

Create your own stress-free working environment:

The nature of the workspace and business life is changing extremely fast. Advances in computer technology and international communications mean that people can work from anywhere: forecasters say that by the beginning of the twenty-first century, over half of the population of North America will be working from home and this trend will be quickly followed in Europe. This revolution is having a dramatic impact on our lives, it is possible to create living and working environments that will sustain us. The key is to achieve balance in how space will be used and determine the boundaries, so that there is a way to shut the door and bring closure at the end of the end of each working day.

The ideal workspace marries purpose and passion. Design your home office to inspire creativity, to offer delight, and to help you complete the job at hand. As a matter of personal taste, a workspace can be elegant or rustic, sleek or cozy, traditional or individual. As a practical matter, what you're aiming for is ease of use and a place you look forward to returning day after day. Think about what makes you happiest when you work. Is it an inspiring view, or an absence of clutter? Perhaps you'd like to have a cozy chair for reading or a daybed for quick catnaps.

Other things to consider are those more specific to the type of work you do and the furnishings that make the most sense for it: a desk for a home office or a large table for an artist's studio. Choosing the right kind of storage open or closed, freestanding or built-in-and a sufficient combination of types of lighting takes careful planning too. Keep in mind office ergonomics as well: table height, chair comfort, room to stretch, and ventilation. Is there a space for a chaise longue? Create a room that makes you want to stay another hour in order to finish the work you have to do, drawing or household bills. A successful home office is one you're in no hurry to leave.

Designing a Family Fitness Room

Creating a family fitness room makes it easier than ever to stick to your workout -- and it's a great place for the kids to hang, too

For most families, the key to fitness can be summed up in one word: convenience. Few things are more convenient than having all the essentials of a fitness club right in your basement.

But when Better Homes and Gardens set about developing the ideal family fitness room, convenience was only one of our considerations. The room had to work as part of a home and as a part of the lives of the family using it.

"If you're going to commit a space in your home to fitness and exercise, you have to make it inviting and motivating," says Eric Rothman of HammerSmith, the Atlanta design/build renovation firm we chose to help bring this family fitness room to life. "You can't just set up a weight bench and your old treadmill down in a dark corner of the basement and call it good. Like any other room in your home, it should be warm and welcoming. You should want to spend time there. And you have to make it so there's something for everyone: yourself, your spouse, and even the youngest children."

Rothman's plan has a distinct family-room feel: Half the room is furnished with a cushioned bench, sofa, coffee table, and shelving for books or a home theater. The other half is an open space with a corner for free weights and bench, and floor room for a treadmill or stair climber.

The design called for recessed lighting and cherry trim to add a note of warmth throughout. Durable, self-adhesive carpet squares help cushion floor exercises. Blinds offer privacy while one person is working out and others are watching TV. Conversely, keeping the blinds up allows exercisers to watch TV or even incorporate exercise videos into the workout. Putting mirrored panels on the back wall not only reflects light and gives the room a more open feel, but also has a practical function.

"Being able to see yourself when performing strength-training exercises helps you check your posture as you work out for better results and less risk of injury," says Jeff Bell, certified strength and conditioning specialist and co-owner of Spectrum Wellness fitness center in Manhattan, who contributed numerous ideas to our room's fitness scheme.

And for the kids, the centerpiece of the room is a wild, wavy climbing wall.

"Not only do climbing walls create an interesting design element, but the kids love them," says Rothman. "These walls are better than a jungle gym. And the holds are movable so, as the kids grow or get bored with one layout, you can mix it around and make it more challenging." That kind of flexible design is essential to ensuring kids make exercise a lifelong habit. Variation keeps families committed to exercise and improves fitness because it encourages working out different muscle groups in different ways, adds Bell.

There are other practical considerations to the family fitness room. Safety aside, exercisers should be able to secure or stow gear that little ones could hurt themselves on. When everyone is done using the room, there should be a place to put everything. That's why our room has plenty of storage possibilities and space for everyone to exercise.

In addition to a closet with ample shelving and drawers for each person's towel and exercise clothes, the bench on the room's opposite side is open at the back with slanted shelves for dumbbells or other equipment. The space behind the climbing wall could also serve to store equipment when you need more floor space for aerobics or the next time the kids want to roll out the mats to do a little tumbling

Decorating Home Tip: Where to Start on All Major Decorating Projects

Recently I was asked, from an overwhelmed homeowner, "in what order should I begin my decorating and remodeling project?" The answer? Do what the professionals do!

When a house is built, they begin with the foundation, build the walls, add a roof, get the inside protected by windows, doors, roofing and siding. Then they come inside and do all the stuff under the protective coating (the drywall, sheetrock, plaster). They wire for electric, put in plumbing, HVAC, security systems, and audio and visual systems. Then they hang the drywall, sheetrock or plaster. After that they usually do trim work like your moldings and door and window facings. At the same time or within some succession they work on built-ins. Then they paint, usually with a sprayer, then they add the bathrooms, kitchens, floors, and finish the trim and light fixtures, etc.

In a home decorating or remodel project if you are starting over from top to bottom you can take the same steps as a professional builder does.

1. First begin with any new construction, room dividers, holes in walls, new window openings, new windows, etc.
2. Next do any electrical work like adding outlets, adding overhead lights, downlights, switches, surround sound, security systems, etc.
3. Now start on your crown molding and trim around windows and doors. Any built ins that are going to be added would be built at this point by your finish carpenter. Once this is complete"…"
4. Paint the walls and trim, get the floors put down (assuming you are adding new prefinished hard wood floors or carpeting).

Once the basics of construction are done, the same rules apply to decorating the space and making it homey, that is adding the colors, the patterns and the fluffy stuff that makes a house feel like a home.

1. Decide what the room is going to be used for and make a plan.
2. Select the furniture that makes sense for your family and your budget.
3. Pick out colors and patterns that work for the room, the style you want and for your family and pets.
4. Select window treatments or curtains to protect your new digs and soften the edges.
5. Hang artwork or wall décor to begin warming up the room and making it your own.
6. And lastly get some accessories and lamps to top it all off!

Guess what? YOU ARE DONE DECORATING!

The most important question for any decorating or home remodeling project is this: what do you want? When you can figure out what you want at the beginning and set yourself up on a plan, each step will fall in line (because you are organized and know exactly what you want), you will be able to make your budget (you can cut costs here and there and look for sales) and the whole project will come together effortlessly.

Decorating for Summer Outdoor Living

Decorating for Summer Outdoor Living
From Coral Nafie,
Your Guide to Interior Decorating.

It's Time to Get Outside
Summer is here in the United States, and everyone is thinking about getting outdoors. The season may be short if you live in the east or Midwest or mountain states, or it may extend almost year round if you're in southern states or California. But wherever you may find yourself, it's time to get outside and enjoy the wonderful weather and beauty of nature.

Vacations are a wonderful time to get outdoors, enjoy hiking, do some outdoor cooking, or just lie around reading a good book. But you don't have to reserve those wonderful activities for those too-short times. Read here for information on some wonderful new products and suggestions on how to make the most of your outdoor time.

One of the wonderful things about summer weather is that it lets you expand your living space without a costly home renovation or addition.

In many cases, you don't have to do much decorating at all. All you really have to do is sweep off the front porch and move a comfortable chair outside. Others of you may want to create a room outside, and the newest products for outdoor living can help you do that at a minimal cost.

Comfortable outdoor furniture is a must, but doesn't have to be expensive. Two lounging chairs and a table with four chairs for eating will really make your outdoor space comfortable.

Many products are available in a wide range of prices and come ready-to-assemble. You can go to your local discount store and find very inexpensive pieces that will last a year or two and give you good wear. Or you can make a modest investment in cast aluminum or wrought iron pieces that will last longer. Any of these needs to be brought inside in the winter to give you the longest life, but they're made to stay outside for the summer months.

More substantial furniture pieces made of teak, redwood, or the new, less-expensive eucalyptus will give you many years of service if treated properly.

If you're looking to save on the pocketbook but not the quality, you can put some models together yourself with glue and a dowel system.

No matter what kind of wood you select, you should have a place indoors to store it through the winter.

Wicker furniture looks wonderful and classic outdoors, but does not wear well in the elements. Cushions must be brought in from the rain and the wicker will deteriorate in the hot sun and humidity if not cared for properly. New all-weather wicker furniture may be the answer and is made by a number of companies.

A glass- or porcelain-topped table will hold up well throughout the season.
Top it with an umbrella to keep the sun off. You may want to look at a fade-proof umbrella. Some new umbrellas are enhanced with solar-powered LED lights strung up the inside on the spine. They give a wonderful light for 8 hours after dark and are easy to maintain.

Cheap Living Room Furniture

The word cheap is a rather subjective word, because living room furniture that seems cheap to one person may be considered expensive to another. On the whole, the main reason one opts for cheap living room furniture is because one is on a tight budget, and cannot spend too much on living room furniture.

When buying cheap living room furniture, it will usually be secondhand furniture. It will be the furniture one person is selling to buy new living room furniture. So logically, the best place to look for cheap living room furniture will be secondhand shops. It is college students and the first-time buyers who usually buy cheap living room furniture for their home, to make their living room comfortable.

Another good place to look for cheap living room furniture is in consignment shops. This is the place where private owners sell their used furniture. These shops have become more and more popular, with the increase in the demand for cheap living room furniture. The inventory here will be unique, with only single pieces of furniture being sold, so there is no chance of someone else buying the same piece. It is always better to get to know the manager of a consignment shop, as he will then tell you when the sort of cheap living furniture that you are looking for comes in. Sometimes the cheap living room furniture may not look good or attractive at first. However, a little refurbishing will make it look more appealing. There are also some people who enjoy painting old furniture. After painting, this cheap living room furniture then becomes attractive and beautiful, to brighten up the living room.

Traditional Living Room Furniture

By Eddie Tobey

The American Traditional style of furniture was influenced by English and French styles. With time it evolved into a unique American style. The traditional living room furniture includes styles such as the clean and simple lines of Shaker furniture, the simplicity of the Mission style and similar styles from artisans in the Southwest and all corners of the country. American traditional style is thus a blend of several styles and it takes the best that every different style has to offer.

The only drawback of traditional living room furniture is that most pieces in this style are a bit large. So if you would like to furnish your living room in this style you need to have a large living room. Sofas, recliners and stand alone chairs generally come with curved and artistically done up handles and legs. These pieces need to be kept well apart so as not to give a crowded look to the room. Besides, it is only when they are placed apart can the craftsmanship be admired.

Well-seasoned good quality wood is used for crafting pieces of traditional living room furniture. Oak, pine, mahogany and walnut are all popular choices for creating exquisite pieces of traditional furniture. The natural rich tones of wood are enhanced by upholstery in traditional prints and soft textures. The end effect is a warm cozy look that looks very inviting.

When opting for a traditional décor it is advisable to select furniture that represents many styles and eras, from Chippendale to Queen Anne and Sheraton to Victorian. Small touches of Oriental influences also look very attractive in this setting. Painted landscapes, a Queen Anne table or lampshade or a Chippendale highboy will immediately give your living room a traditional touch.

Soft and cushy sofas and love seats accessorized with pillows, rolled arms and slipcovers all done up in floral upholstery in subdued colors will give you a warm traditional look.

Furniture Stores

By Kristy Annely

A piece of furniture doesn’t just serve a functional purpose. It is a part of the home decor, expected to coordinate with the house’s ambience and have a style and personality of its own. The furniture industry has risen to this demand and has gone a step further in providing a plethora of design and style options. Furniture stores of all possible kinds swarm the market. Retail furniture stores, lifestyles stores, exclusive baby furniture stores, office furniture stores, home office furniture stores, used furniture stores, wholesale and discount stores, and unfinished and ready-to-make unassembled furniture stores are all making their presence felt. Specialized furniture stores for every demand are easily found in the local markets as well as online. The easy availability of good-quality furniture present in specialized stores and displayed appealingly sometimes creates a need among consumers where none existed before.

The best way to find local furniture stores is to search the Yellow Pages or mail-order catalogs. Surfing the net for local stores is not a very productive effort. However, some websites like www.furniturefan.com give a listing of various furniture stores scattered across America. Caution should be the name of the game while making purchases. Good quality, high-demand products, including vintage, antique and authentic rustic pieces, come with a heavy price. For those short on cash, many stores offer financing, easy-payment deals, and down payment options during purchases. Sometimes these turn out to be sneaky. It always helps to check the various written policies (damaged products, refund etc) and the reputation of the store before going for any deal.

It is always better to buy from stores, whether offline or online, as they provide good quality products in eclectic styles catering to everyone’s taste. Brands include Ethan Allen, Ashley, Millennium, Wesley Allen, Geovanny Turanu and many more. Most stores provide free local shipping, and the product is packaged appropriately for damage-free delivery.

Online stores like www.furniture.com and www.furniturefind.com enable a customer to shop in the comfort of their home. Most websites feature room planners and style guides to aid a customer in his hunt for the perfect furniture. It’s safer to check the websites for the BBB logo. The BBB (Better Business Bureau) is a non-government mediating organization that seeks to settle disputes, if any, between a business body and the consumer.

Lof Furniture Beds

By Peter Emerson

Log furniture beds are a rather innovative furniture style as compared to traditional hardwood furniture. Very often, log and rustic styles uphold the natural shape, texture, and luster of the wood used. They go a long way in retaining the natural qualities of a particular wood type. Apart from this, log furniture beds are not without logs knots or bold grains. This enhances its natural look and makes it distinct from others. A large number of log furniture beds, though specially treated, are left unfinished to maintain the rustic theme. Apart from purchasing log furniture beds from registered stores, innovative individuals may avail of log furniture bed plans. They are easy to follow and offer detailed information. Armed with the right tools and wood selection, it is possible to make log furniture beds at home too.

Log furniture beds are available in Southwestern designs and other contemporary styles. When potential buyers decide to buy log furniture beds, it is advisable to indulge in comparison-shopping before making a decision. This helps compare price points, features, and manufacturer's reputation. Log beds can be made of either soft or hard wood. This includes cedar, pine, oak, walnut, hickory, and maple. Other varieties include birch, cherry, alder, and willow. It is possible to find log beds at fair price shops and closeouts.

They are widely available at local, lifestyle, and online furniture stores. People may choose to read reviews, guides, and catalogs, to find an affordable log furniture bed that is well matched with the surrounding décor. Apart from designer varieties, log furniture beds are available at regular prices, and through discount sales. Certain durable and stable log furniture beds can stand the test of time and age gracefully. It is important to find a quality product that does not decay, rot or are weakened by insect attacks and termites. Certain log furniture beds are made of wood that has natural oils, which can withstand such problems

Wood Furniture - The Many Types and Defenitions

By James T. Allen

Ah technology. We live in an age where people carry around their entire CD collections in a device the size of a deck of cards, digitally record TV shows to be viewed at their convenience, and conduct business globally with a few keystrokes and mouse clicks. "What does this have to do with furniture?" you may be asking. Well, technology has changed the construction of furniture greatly over the last 20-30 years. Wood furniture used to be easily defined. If a piece of furniture was made of wood, there was no question it was solid wood or pieces of solid wood fashioned together to form a table or chair or chest of drawers.

Today, solid wood furniture is becoming increasingly hard to find and can be very expensive. Veneers and engineered woods have become the material of choice for most furniture manufacturers, with terms like 'medium density fiberboard' and 'hardboard' replacing oak, maple, and birch. The following will hopefully clear everything up and tell you just how your next furniture purchase was made.

A piece said to be made of solid wood generally means that all exposed parts are made of solid board. No veneers or particleboards are used. Solid board can always be identified by following a seam to the end, where you find the "end" grain. A lot of veneers are glued over the edges to look like solid wood, but they are usually faced on the end and show no end grain.

All-wood furniture is not necessarily solid wood. In most cases, this means that veneers are used to achieve the look of solid wood. A veneer is a very thin layer of wood often overlaid on plywood or particleboard. The best quality veneers use solid wood cores for added strength and shock absorption.

Particleboard is made from grinding wood into very small chips and particles that are bonded with synthetic resins under heat and pressure to form hard panels. The most common type of particleboard used in furniture manufacturing is medium density fiberboard, or MDF. Another type of particleboard you may encounter is hardboard, which has a greater density than MDF.

Modern Office Furniture

By Kristy Annely

Office furniture must be both appealing as well as utilitarian. The basic components of office furniture are tables, chairs, sofa sets, cabinets, file drawers and presentation boards. There can be many more components depending on the budget and tastes of the office owners.

Most modern office furniture is made of vinyl and steel. The traditional patterns of wood are out. There is also a profuse use of glass, which enhances the look of the furniture. Glass can be molded, colored and etched, giving it various designs and patterns. Glass coupled with other materials, or even alone, is an integral part of office furniture.

Tables are most important in an office. They may be present in various sizes. The biggest tables are required in conference rooms. Conference rooms are highly important, as these are the places where visiting clients are entertained and presentations are held. Hence, conference room furniture is vital to the image of an office. Conference tables should have matching chairs. They must be comfortable, but they can be as unconventional in design as needed.

Offices have their own kinds of furniture. Chiefly needed are a desk and a plush chair, other chairs for seating clients and several drawers. The desk should not be too large so as to intimidate clients; and the drawers should not be too many to get confusing.

Even furniture in the foyers and waiting rooms is important, as this is the place where clients wait and make their judgments about the office. Comfy sofas and a few low tables with magazines often suffice, but it pays to have some paintings and wall hangings with bright lighting. The reception desk also should be clean and inviting.

Office furniture is often termed commercial furniture. Even mortgages available for office improvements are levied at commercial rates of interest. Naturally, building a whole office setup requires a lot of planning and investment. Office furniture cannot be changed again and again. There are many reasons for this. One reason is the difficulty in stopping work for a number of days. Another is that staff and clients are often nonplussed by changing office furniture, as they prefer familiar surroundings for them to work in. It may also project the shaky mind of the office owners.

How To Choose New Home Furniture

By Michael Russell

One of the best things in life is choosing new furniture. The type of furniture you choose says a lot about you as a person. You can transform a plain home into one that is welcoming and warm. Your likes and dislikes will influence the type of furniture you buy. Some of you will want to change your furniture frequently. Others are happy to live with the same furniture for years. Your budget will usually determine what you can buy but today there is a wealth of styles, colours, woods and fabrics to suit all budgets. As a general rule, the more expensive the furniture the longer it will last but this doesn't always apply.

If you have young children you will probably need robust furniture that will stand up to wear and tear. On the other hand, retired people are often in a position to indulge their love of fine, delicately constructed furniture. If you dislike classical or traditional furniture you may well prefer modern, contemporary styles or opt for the minimalist look. Those who dislike reproduction furniture often have a love for the real thing, that is, antique furniture which comes with a high price tag.

Whatever your preference, whether it's mahogany, limed oak, yew, pine, cherry wood, teak or glass, your choice will often reflect your individuality. It indicates that you are making a statement about yourself.

Whatever you decide to buy can make your home look smaller or larger which is often worth bearing in mind. This doesn't really matter unless you have small rooms, in which case the lighter the colour of furniture and furnishings the better, as these help to make the room look larger.

Buying furniture gives me a buzz particularly when buying sofas and/or armchairs. There are so many styles, fabrics and colours it can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. Do you want plain, patterned, striped, flowered, velvet, silk, tweed, cotton, leather or chintz fabric? Then again do you want a 2, 3, 4 seater or corner sofa? Perhaps you'd prefer two sofas and no armchairs or a combination of both. Once those decisions have been made you can then think about the style you want - ie traditional, modern, country house style etc. At this point you're almost there ! This is my favourite part - actually getting to choose the furniture after giving it so much thought !

You'll then want to concentrate on other furniture such as coffee tables, occasional tables, lamp tables and maybe mirrors.

Your initial choice of sofas and/or armchairs will have a considerable impact on the rest of the furniture you choose for the sitting room. You'll no doubt want these other pieces to complement each other which can be fun and fascinating to arrange. If your sitting room is small, glass topped coffee, occasional and lamp tables will give a feeling of space and light to the room but can look equally stunning in much larger rooms. In particular, glass topped occasional tables with brass legs usually look extremely good with most furniture.

Next may want to think about furniture for your dining room. Again, the style of your home will influence your decision. If you want your dining room to look elegant you'll very likely consider a classic, highly polished dining table and matching chairs. For a more `homely` look pine may be your choice. If your dining room is large you'll want matching dressers or corner tables to complete the picture.

Your following concern will probably be the kitchen. Most are completely fitted these days so you may only need to buy a kitchen table and chairs. The existing units and counter tops are generally a good indication of the type of kitchen table you need which helps considerably when making a choice. You'll find the range is huge !

Now it's on to the bedrooms where you can let your imagination run riot ! Your first task will consist of selecting the beds if you're furnishing throughout. I'm sure you know the mattress is the most important purchase when making up your mind. This is one item which really is worth spending as much as you can afford for obvious reasons. The better the mattress the more comfortable it will be and the longer it will last. The style of bed you choose will be personal which shouldn't present a problem as this narrows the choice tremendously.

It there are no custom built wardrobes or chests of drawers you'll need to add these to your list of furniture to buy. Once more, the range is endless including rich wood finishes such as mahogany, light limed oak, teak, pine or a white matt finish to name but a few. It's also worth remembering bedside tables. Here again your lifestyle will have an effect on your choices. Very young children or teenagers will be crucial to your decisions.

You may have a conservatory in which case you can't go wrong with pine or white cane furniture plus deep, comfy cushions in whatever colour or pattern takes your fancy.

Should you have a family room, how you furnish it will be dictated by how many people use it and how often. If it's used frequently the furniture you choose obviously needs to be hard wearing. Leather or tweed covered sofas usually work well in addition to being hard wearing and looking good.

For those of you who have a study or office remember that it, too, needs to be and look comfortable. So yet again you'll want to buy the best you can afford. Apart from a good desk and office chair, a really comfortable armchair is always useful and gives a cosy atmosphere. A matching bookcase will be functional as well as attractive.

Finally, the garden! Garden furniture is a must and is now much more comfortable than it used to be. Tables, chairs, sun loungers in matching or co-ordinating fabrics look inviting and create a relaxed atmosphere for the whole family. Last but not least don't forget the canvas garden umbrella and stand.

Oh, I almost forgot! You might like to add a couple of garden benches.

Patio Furniture - Tips For Choosing The Right Out door Furniture

By Todd Chism

There are several different types of patio furniture from which you can choose. The right selection of outdoor furniture can make your outdoor area an alluring area for relaxation. Furniture designed for outdoor living comes in a wide variety of styles, materials and price ranges. When shopping for your patio and outdoor decor, there are several things you should consider.

The patio furniture you choose for your outdoor accommodation is just as important today as the furniture you buy for your interior. In effect, many of the pieces are similar with the major difference being that garden furniture tends to be placed in a much harsher environment. After a long day of work, whether in or at the office or in the yard, there’s nothing more satisfying than coming home and relaxing in the security of your own backyard, on your very own patio furniture. Wrought iron is probably one of the most commonly used types of outdoor furniture. There are advantages and disadvantages to this material.

Wrought iron may come with some form of weatherproofing but may need maintenance over the years to help remove any rust or discoloration. It is one of the heaviest and sturdiest outdoor furniture types, and can last for years when cared for properly. Many people like its stylish appearance. Wicker is another popular choice because it is overall appearance and lightness but doesn’t tend to last as long. Cast aluminum is a favorite among commercial applications and Teak patio furniture is probably one of the longest lasting because of the unique type of wood. The benefit of teak is that it is a hard wood which can last 20 years or more if maintained properly.

Choosing the right Patio Furniture

What to ask yourself

1. What is my style?
2. Where am I going to reside my furnishings?
3. How much am I willing to spend?
4. How long do I want my furniture to last?
5. Is your patio covered or is it open?
6. How many people do you think will need seating on your patio?
7. Do you use your outdoors furniture a little or a lot?

Answers

1. Style is a very important factor when picking out your patio furniture. Who wants to see an awesome deal, for say, on great lounge chairs & an ottoman, and bring them home, only to find that your neighbor had just bought the same furnishings? One way to express your unique style is through your patio furniture. You may not want to settle for the cheap set of patio furniture at your local super market, when you can get a higher quality furniture and cushions at just a little more cost.
2. Where you decide to put your outdoor furnishings is crucial to the duration in which the furniture last. If the furniture is going to be placed und extreme weather conditions, perhaps you should buy a commercial or heavier-duty piece of furniture.
3. When buying patio furniture, you wouldn’t want to buy a piece of furniture and have it fall apart in your backyard after a few months, would you? The better quality, the more expensive it’s going to be, but I believe “you get what you pay for”. Be sure to do your homework, and buy what you think is right for you.
4. If you want your furniture to last, and continue to look great in your backyard for more than a few months, then buying a higher-quality furnishing would be a necessity. Where you place you furniture also contributes to the duration of your outdoor furniture.
5. Depending if your patio Is a covered or open patio can be crucial to your furniture’s working order. If you can protect the furnishings from extreme weather conditions, the longer the furniture will often last.
6. You wouldn’t want to be entreating friends & family in your backyard and have a mishap of being short on seating, would you? Be sure to buy enough to accommodate for multiple arrangements.
7. When using you furniture, don’t you want nice, great quality furniture. When people complement on your outdoor arrangement, you will know you have chosen the right furniture. The more comfortable and intriguing your furniture looks, the more likely someone is to relax and “kick back” on it.

When choosing your patio furniture, another important step to making you backyard exhilarate with excellence, is accessorizing with a patio umbrella, patio heater and cushions. I recommend this site: Patioshoppers.com:

Modern Furniture

By Kristy Annely

The term ‘modern furniture’ is actually pretty confusing. There have been gradual changes in furniture patterns since the World War II, and in the last few decades there has been a snowballing transition in furniture styles. Recent furniture patterns are different than those of just a few years ago. Modern furniture today uses a wide array of unconventional materials like vinyl, tubular aluminum alloys, cane and jute. Not just the construction materials, but also their styles, have undergone a sea change. Modern furniture has greater unconventional designs than their predecessors – the sharp straight look is gone; curves and abstract lines are in.

Furniture in homes today is considered a representation of the owners’ identities. Every family wants a unique style of furniture, and they don’t mind the cost. People are willing to go to any lengths to make their furniture different from ‘the Joneses’. The age of looking at catalogs and ordering furniture is gone. People today want furniture makers to conceptualize new styles for them. The more different the style from the norm, the more chance it has to be approved. Colors, patterns, curves and even utility have undergone an immense change.

Furniture designing has become as important as fashion designing or building architecture. Several furniture architects have gained wide repute. A few among them are Herman Miller, Florence Bassett, Hans Knoll and Charles and Ray Eames. They are pioneers in various new designs of furniture, which include modular sofas and highly abstract lamps.

One striking aspect is that several features that were considered landmarks of old style furniture have simply been chucked out of the window. Wood is out; vinyl is in. There are no more dark contours with musty wooden smells; they have been replaced by bright colors with patterns as varied as butterflies, flowers and even religious motifs and abstract shapes. Browns and blacks are no longer to be seen as abundantly as turquoises, tangerines, crimsons and chartreuses. Similarly, wrought iron is no longer used. It has been replaced by tubular alloys of aluminum and steel. This transition is mainly due to new furniture-manufacturing technologies of the past decades. Machine-made furniture molds can easily craft any shape of furniture that may be desired.

Needless to say, furniture today is priced more for its design than for its make. There is a lot less handwork in the furniture and more machine work. This makes manufacturing costs lower, as furniture parts can be manufactured on an assembly line. However, the design is all that adds to the cost.

Types of Bathroom Furniture

Most interior designers find it challenging to design and decorate a well-facilitated bathroom. For most people, it is the perfect place to relax and release the body and mind from the clutches of routine tensions and stress. It provides personal space to individuals and therefore necessitates pleasant décor. There is a baffling range of bathroom accessories and furniture to appeal to people with varied tastes. From traditional to contemporary, the range is endless and come in all price brackets.
Vanity sink cabinets are a popular choice among cabinets. They come with sleek and stylish countertops made of various materials. Most people, who have smaller bathrooms, prefer to have cabinets that include a mirror and shaver sockets. Generally, cabinets are designed to include drawers for keeping undergarments and other necessary items. Many people prefer oak or maple cabinets. Rattan furniture and Wicker furniture is highly popular as it combines strength and intricate designs. Wicker furniture offers a rustic look to the furniture and is made from bamboo, reed, willow, or synthetic fibers. A large number of wicker objects can be included in the bathroom to complement the furniture. This form of furniture is inexpensive and easily available. Most common type of wicker furniture includes chest of drawers to keep linen.

Contemporary bathrooms include lavish bathtubs, which come in a variety of colors, styles, and materials. Bathtubs can come in round, rectangular or a square shape. Bathtubs can be made of stainless steel, ceramic or glass. Acrylic baths are also very popular among most individuals as they are devoid of the cold metallic feel. However, stainless steel baths score over acrylic baths as they last longer and are easier to maintain. Washbasins are also designed aesthetically to complement the décor of the bathroom.

Bathroom furniture can be complimented by choosing matching or contrast furnishings such as curtains. Many people select furniture and accessories that complement the bedroom furniture as well.

Choosing A Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks should be chosen for their functionality as well as their aesthetic value in the kitchen. There are literally hundreds of styles of sinks and numerous materials and mounting methods available.
Sink bowls are different sizes in both opening and depth and vary in the bowl shape. Bowls can be combined in single units to obtain double and triple bowl sinks, in many cases the bowls are of different sizes in order to serve different purposes. Sinks can also be obtained with integral drainers.

For mounting, a free standing sink can be purchased as a surface mount, where it has a rim that is visible on top of the counter and a under-counter mount, which, as the name implies the sink mounts under the counter and there is no visible rim. You cannot use an under-counter mount if your counter top is not made of solid material such as a composite or natural stone. The third style of sink is one that is integral with the counter top, these are available for composite type counter tops.

The most common kitchen sink, whether it be a surface mount or under-counter mount is made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is the best sink when it comes to cleaning, durability and stain resistance.

Kitchen sinks can also come with an assortment of accessories. Items such as vegetable cutting boards are quite common.

The depth of a kitchen sink can be very important. If you use a lot of large pots in your cooking, remember that you want a convenient method of filling the pot with water. If the sink isn't deep enough, you will have problems. The need for a deep sink can be offset by having a faucet with a spout hose.

Garden Design

Gardens have been around since a long time, although recent developments have introduced many intuitive ideas for designing wonderful gardens. For example, a combination of concrete bricks and vinyl fencing is enough to create a garden worth admiring.
Garden designs have been split into two types in modern days: informal and formal gardens. In some cases it can be hard to establish the difference between the two types.

Formal Garden - Oriental

Oriental gardens may seem very informal at first but that is not the case. These gardens are very formal and they use the space available for different elements with care and purpose. In many opinions oriental garden is seen as the ultimate of beauty and style. The mixture of stones, plants and water are carefully picked to highlight the different areas that are within the garden. Everything that is chosen has meaning attached to it. And finally another feature of this type of garden is that nothing is overdone, it is kept as it is likely to be found in naturally.

Paradise

An alternative type of formal garden is the Paradise garden, which came from Islamic history. This is built keeping in mind on thing which is to stimulate all five of our sense. For example you will hear the water running down in a stream or waterfall, you will smell the essence of the flowers, see the bright colors, eat the fruits growing in your garden and feel the plants'.

Informal Gardens

When you see a garden built within an existing marquee of trees, that is when you have seen an informal garden. These trees are used as a starting point to create the plan for the garden, they can be used as a direction to create a walk path within the garden. Then the rest of empty spaces can be filled with plants that do not need sunlight. A small area for pond can put a brilliant touch to finish the garden off.

To summarise you need to keep open to the various opportunities available for you, do not do what your neighbours are doing, do what you want to do. At the end of the day only you can decide on your dream garden, it does not have to be either a informal or formal garden design. It comes down to personal taste and what you would love to be in your garden. All you need is just your imagination.

Beautiful Bedroom Sets

Whoever said that bedroom sets had to cost a great deal of money to be comfortable or attractive must have profited from a well known name brand furniture designer looking to make a buck. You can find affordable bedroom sets all over the place, many of which are perfect imitations of some of the more expensive designs, without having to look hard. Where are the best places to start looking for inexpensive furnishings for your bedroom?

Decorating your home with discount bedroom sets is made simple by online stores that wrap the entire set into one package deal. While many high end furniture stores will sell items by the piece and never offer a discount for bulk purchases, others will knock hundreds of dollars off the price when you buy the entire set. Many of these will let you add pieces to the discount bedroom sets for a minimal cost as well, such as a second night table, an armoire, or chest of drawers. Online stores have the advantage of saving money on shipping when ordering multiple items and some will pass that savings on to you.

Another place to look is the factory. If you call a manufacturer, you may find that they have affordable bedroom sets sitting in a warehouse that no one has ordered, that were returned, or that have small mistakes, like being short a nail or having a small scratch in the wood. Choosing among these can save you hundreds of dollars on a brand new furniture set, even on the more expensive name brand products.

Another way to save money on your bedroom is to look at something smaller. For example, while you might want a king sized bed, queen bedroom sets and their accessories cost a lot less. This means that you can save not only on the immediate purchase but also on the additional décor later. When it comes to kids bedroom sets, you don't even need anything decorative. Your children are going to grow and change so quickly that you shouldn't spend a fortune on the bedroom suite that they pick out. Instead, choose something that will be functional for years to come, and let your son or daughter pick out the twin sized comforter that will decorate the kids bedroom set that you purchase.

One final way to find affordable bedroom sets is by visiting furniture stores when the latest styles arrive. During this time, it is necessary to make room for the newest fashions that have arrived and discard last year's models, much like liquidation at a car lot or a seasonal sale at a department store. Therefore, you can find affordable bedroom sets among last season's "cast offs" that are marked down to make way for the new models.

Home Sweet Home Front'

Much has been written about Britain's Military role in the Second World War. From the Outbreak of hostilities in 1939 to peace in 1945, accounts of Britain's early struggle through to her eventual victory are well documented.

But what of those left behind? Those civilians of the home front left to face their own hardships and the ever changing times. How did they cope with the restrictions of rationing? How did they come to terms with the frightening reality of air raid bombings? How did British women overcome male disdain and evolve from their recognised role of home makers to that of the working women of the 'Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WVS)', munitions factories, the 'Women's Land Army (WLA)' and the such like?

The 'Home Sweet Home Front' website has been designed to go some way to give insight into what it was really like for those heroes and heroines of the British home front during World War Two - click and enjoy!

Right Color, Right Paint

Perfect paint and color can make a great difference to your home décor project. Here are some tips for amateur home decorators and professional interior designers that can help them understand the color basics and make paint selection easier:
Alkyd or oil-based paints are good for wood painting and does not leave it sticky in winters but latex or water-based paints dry faster, can be cleaned with soapy water and does not turn yellow easily and is thus, better for walls.
Chosen paint colors may look different in different lights, at daytime and at night. So, you may want to access the look of the room in different lights and according to the function of the room.
Colors can look darker or lighter over a large area depending on the colors of the surroundings and lighting in the room, so keep that in mind while choosing the right tint or shade of the color.
Dark and warm shades make rooms look smaller such as red, orange, yellow and even dark shades of navy blue while light and cool colors make the room look larger and more spacious such as light shades of blue, green and even violet. Best colors for small rooms are white and light and pale neutral colors.
For an open, spacious and airy look in a room with chair rails, paint the portion below the chair rail in a dark shade and the wall above it in a light shade.
Generally, ceilings are painted in pure white, off white and tinted white colors to make them appear high and make the room look open but if ceilings are high enough, one can use medium to dark colors to make the room look cozier as they tend to make the ceiling advance to the eyes of the viewer.
Since colors affect the mood, choose relaxing muted colors for bedrooms and stimulating colors for kitchen and dining room.
Taking furniture, window treatments and accessories of the room into consideration, determine the color scheme of the room.
To add bold dash of colors to the room, use a darker shade to paint the trims than the walls.
To add subtle accents to the room, use a lighter shade to paint your trims.
To calculate the amount of paint you need for a room, multiply the height of the room by its perimeter taking care not to count the doors, windows and archways in the room to calculate its wall space. Then ask the paint stores for the exact amount of paint your will need for the calculated wall space of the room and number of coats you are planning for. Since blue and yellow colors need more coats, you will need more of them, in case you are using them.
To disguise an unattractive trim or achieve a monochromatic, uniform look, paint your trim in the same color as your walls.
To soften the look of a bold color on walls, you can try rag rolling, sponging or color washing the walls using a light muted shade.

Choosing Color Schemes

Color scheme helps your to determine the harmony between colors in home décor. A color wheel can be quite useful while deciding a color scheme for your home as it helps you to compare complimentary colors. Interactive color wheel tools and software are available online for your reference. The use of color wheel makes choosing the combination of colors for painting your walls, accents, furnishings, furniture and accessories much easier. Here are a few tips that you can use while deciding upon the color scheme for your home:

Monochromatic color scheme uses only one color throughout. Variety is introduced by using various tints, tones, values and shades of that key color and different textures.

Complimentary color scheme uses two colors placed opposite to each other on the color wheel, their tints, tones, shades and values such as yellow and violet. This scheme is quite bold and lend a dramatic touch to the home décor.
Analogous color schemes use three hues placed adjacent to each other on the color wheel but use either combination of warm colors only or combination of cool colors only.

Triadic color schemes use three hues placed consecutively or at equal distances from each other such as red, yellow and blue, their tints, tones, shades and values

A novice can easily decide upon the color scheme using the following steps:

Use your favorite pattern as the guiding line for your color palette. The lightest color in the pattern can be used for the background such as wall paint color, medium color for large furniture pieces, windows, doors, closets and cabinets while the darkest color can be used for accessories.

Color can make quite a lot of difference to the size and proportion of the room. So, remember that white and pale colors reflect light more to making the room appear larger while dark colors make room appear cozier and smaller.

When it comes to furniture and accessories, white and pale colored objects or objects in similar color as the wall recede into background while brighter and darker objects attract our attention more and seem to occupy more space, so if the room is really small, you can try buying furniture and furnishings in same color as your walls or pale shades and accessorize with bright bold colors to create focal points.

Decoration Trends

Decoration and design trends and themes keep changing with times, as do the facilities and appliances one uses in the home. It plays quiet an important role in almost all of the decorating decisions. The three most talked about and basic decoration trends are:
Country or rustic look;
Casual or contemporary décor; and
Traditional and classic look.

While most prefer to decorate their homes in contemporary style, traditional styles bring back nostalgic memories to many. There are some others who feel that country and rustic style home put us closer to nature. All the other themes are considered secondary in nature and are developed on one of these themes as the foundation. Such as country style is said to provide the base for Country French or Mission-style home decoration. We can see that in some regions, one style dominated others while in another region, some other style or trend may have the upper hand.

The decoration style preferred by a person usually depends on individual taste, age and color combinations. Casual home décor is usually guided by home decorating magazines and may range from black plastic to chrome and glass combinations. These days, people are going for clean, simple and minimalist décor with occasional geometric patterns. Colors most preferred these days beige, white and gray with light wood furniture and accessories such as those made from natural maple to match.

The traditional style of course uses rich and ornate designs that reflect grandeur and opulence and deep and dark colors with jewel tones such as emerald green, burgundy and navy blue. The details are often in polished brass and gold work while woodwork is generally of cherry wood and has dark stains. Leather furniture is also common in such décor.

The country style keeps changing too. While plaids, fruity and birdy patterns have long gone out of style; baby boomers love to be 'cool and trendy'. Bright color combinations are quite common with ample use of lime green, bright blue and red that are muted down using the soft pastels and earthy tones here and there. Sturdy, overstuffed, nostalgic furniture is a common sight in this style with an antique look enhanced by crackled or distressed paint finish. They are meant to be very very comfortable, warm and cozy.

While decorating homes in a particular style, you do not only pay attention to family rooms, kitchens or dining areas only but also extend it to the master and guest bathrooms and powder rooms for the complete effect. Chrome and brushed nickel are the most popular bath accessory finishes closely followed by oil-rubbed bronze and wrought iron looks. These bath accessories can also be categorized under the heads of country, casual or contemporary, and classic or traditional. New trends include 'retro-style' designs and wood finishes such as that of maple and oak along with constant influx of new simple, creative and innovative designs such as open towel ring or stylish glass shelf that add new dimension to bath décor and complement the overall bath designs.

There are faucets and showerheads that should be chosen according to the decoration style that you choose and accessories should match the finish of faucets. Use traditional accessories in non-traditional ways such as placing small votive candles in existing soap tumbler holders for a soft glow or tall tapers in a large bath to add the dramatic and romantic touch. Decorative shelves can be used to place fresh flowers or family photos for that special touch. You may also add color and texture to the bath by using towels and napkins of all sizes to match your chosen decoration style without having to spend big bucks for enhancing the character of your home.

Decorating Small Home

Space in home and apartment décor is not just about physical dimensions. It is about the visual impression too. So, use these wonderful tips to transform your small apartment or home into a luxurious, lavish, airy and spacious home:
Arrange the largest piece of furniture on the longest wall of the room and keep the focal point easily visible from the place.
Buy small pieces of furniture that have open designs and can be rearranged easily such as a love seat with exposed legs instead of big bulky sofa sets, two small side chairs and a small glass top coffee table.
Ceiling lightings should be avoided as it cuts off the height of the room.
Ceilings lighter than the walls and furniture of the room make room look brighter.
Mark out a conversation area in the living room by placing the loveseat on the longest wall, coffee table in front of it and the side chairs facing the table on both its sides.
Place your furniture in the room in such a manner that people don't stumble into it while coming in or going out of the room or to reach cabinets and closets.
Soft incandescent lights placed evenly throughout the room that eliminate shadows make room look larger.
Soft monochromatic color schemes make rooms look bigger.
Stick to simplistic minimalist lifestyle and keep your home clean and well organized.
Use accessories sparingly and use mirrors and shiny reflective surfaces abundantly so that it reflects more light and makes the room look bigger and more spacious.
Use smaller patterns on walls and big pieces of furniture. If you do use large patterns, stick to small accessories, pillows and small areas.
